Our Philosophy
At Root and Roam, we believe that children learn best through curiosity, connection, and collaboration through meaningful experiences. When given time to explore the natural world, ask questions, and engage with real-life tasks, children develop a deeper understanding of both academic concepts and themselves.
Our approach is teacher-guided and child-led. We provide thoughtful structure, meaningful activities, and gentle guidance, while allowing children’s interests and discoveries to shape the learning process. This balance encourages independence, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.
Nature is at the heart of everything we do. The fields, woods, gardens, and animals of our homestead become living classrooms where children observe seasonal changes, solve problems, practice responsibility, and build resilience. Outdoor learning naturally integrates science, math, language arts, history, physical movement, and social-emotional growth in ways that feel authentic and engaging. Whether we are sharing in stories, exploring native plants and trees, measuring for recipes or graphing egg hatching success, children will find excitement in linking these subject areas to the world around them.
We believe that learning happens best within a supportive community. By working together, sharing discoveries, and caring for the land and animals around us, children develop empathy, confidence, cooperation, and respect for others and the world they live in.
At Root and Roam, our goal is not only to support academic growth, but to nurture curious thinkers, capable problem-solvers, and children who feel connected to the natural world.
